Hyperparathyroidism

 

Definition

 

Increased secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) from the parathyroid glands located on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland.

 

Aetiology

 

Hyperparathyroidism may be primary, secondary or tertiary (see Table 11.16). Secretion of PTH like peptide is seen in squamous cell bronchial carcinoma.




Pathophysiology

 

PTH is an 84 amino acid polypeptide, which controls normal calcium homeostasis.
