The ACC/AHA guidelines note that only the subset of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who would benefit from revascularization, irrespective of their need for a nonemergent surgical procedure, would likely benefit from preoperative coronary interventions. Consequently, the indications for the testing of such patients as candidates for a coronary intervention are unrelated to their presenting for surgery and depend only on whether such evalua-tion would be indicated as part of general medical management.
